Columbia received the news late into the week heading into their February 28th match against the Charlotte Barbarians. Not only did the Barbarians hand in a forfeit against the defending National Champions, Asheville also handed in a forfeit for their upcoming match on the 21st of march.

The club have released the following as an official statement on their Instagram:

"The Charlotte Barbarians and Asheville RFC have officially forfeited their scheduled matrix season matches against Columbia Rhinos RFC.

Columbia Rhinos were prepared and available to compete in both fixtures. The forfeits were submitted by our opponents and have been confirmed by the league.

As a club, we respect the league and oppositions' ruling and decision and will continue our preparations as we shift our focus towards the playoffs. We extend our best wishes to both clubs for a successful and competitive remainder of their season.

Thank you to our players, supporters, and partners for your continued commitment throughout the matrix season.

We move forward.🦏"

The bittersweet tone highlights mounting frustrations as many teams experience their opponents forfeiting over the course of this season. It lends very little credit to strong sides who have done the hard work to prepare for playoff runs when their league opponents aren't offering a challenge.

There is lots of work to be done to support the struggling sides in order to fulfill a strong regular season competition. The rise of young talent within the Carolinas is slowly flooding into the senior competitions, which should benefit lots of clubs in the long run. How can we make our region attractive to an abundance of talent? And, how can we keep them here?
